Instagram Algorithm 2026: What Actually Gets Reach, Straight from Adam Mosseri

Instagram algorithm 2026: what actually gets reach
What actually gets reach on Instagram in 2026, straight from Adam Mosseri: the top ranking signals, why sends beat comments, whether you still need Reels, and the myths he ruled out, including his October 23, 2026 answer on scheduling.

Short answer: In 2026 the Instagram algorithm ranks every post by how likely people are to watch it, like it and send it to a friend. Adam Mosseri named watch time, likes and sends as the three signals that matter most, and on October 23, 2026 he added that Instagram focuses “a lot more” on content people send to a friend than on comments. Reels are not mandatory, carousels beat single photos, original content beats reposts, and scheduling a post does not hurt its reach: “I schedule posts all the time.”

Every quote below comes from Mosseri's own videos and Q&As, with the date. Nothing here is a growth guru's theory.

Every week a new carousel tells you that Instagram punishes schedulers, rewards rage bait or only shows Reels now. The Head of Instagram answers these questions himself, almost every Friday, in his Stories. We went through his answers from 2025 and 2026, including his newest Q&A from October 23, 2026, and turned them into a practical guide for brands and agencies. If a claim is not on the record, it is not in this article.

Key facts at a glance

  • Top ranking signals: watch time, likes and sends (Mosseri, January 2025).
  • Sends to a friend matter more than comments (Mosseri, October 23, 2026).
  • More and more reach comes from recommendations to people who do not follow you yet.
  • You can grow without Reels; carousels do better than single photos.
  • Scheduling, ads, hashtags and what you watch do not change your reach.
  • AI content is not throttled, but Instagram wants it labeled.

How the Instagram Algorithm Works in 2026

There is no single algorithm. Feed, Reels, Explore and Stories each rank content a little differently, but they all try to predict the same thing: will this person find this post worth their time? Mosseri spelled out the core of it at the start of 2025:

“The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends.”

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, algorithm video series, January 2025 · as reported by Social Media Today

He added a detail most guides skip: “Likes are slightly more important for connected content, and sends are slightly more important for unconnected content.” In plain words, likes help you with your followers, sends help you reach new people.

That second group keeps getting bigger. Explaining why Instagram changed its approach to political content, Mosseri said on October 23, 2026 that “more and more of the reach on Instagram came from recommendations.” Your next follower will most likely see you in Reels or Explore before they ever visit your profile.

In the same Q&A he described what the ranking tries to find: things people “are gonna say that it was worth their time, that they're gonna watch to the end, that they're gonna like or send to a friend.”

Sends Beat Comments: The Most Underrated Signal of 2026

Asked on October 23, 2026 whether the algorithm favors negativity, Mosseri gave the clearest description yet of how Instagram weighs comments against sharing:

“The thing that we definitely do value in the ranking model that might correlate with negativity is comments, but it's not the most important part of value by a long shot. We actually focus a lot more on finding reels and photos that you might send to a friend than you would post to everybody or comment on.”

He also said Instagram does not “do anything on purpose to try to promote negativity”. For brands this kills two tactics at once: rage bait, and “comment YES below” posts built only to farm comments. What travels is the post someone forwards to a colleague with “we should do this”.

What to do: before you approve a post, ask one question: who would send this, and to whom? Practical checklists, honest data, a funny truth about the client's industry and behind-the-scenes moments get sent. Generic “Happy Monday” graphics do not.

Do You Still Need Reels? Not Necessarily

One of the questions on October 23 was whether a photographer can grow without making Reels. Mosseri's answer starts with one word: “Yes.”

“There are definitely accounts on Instagram that grow without posting any reels by just posting photos.”

His advice for photo-first accounts is specific:

  • Use carousels. They “tend to do better than single photos because they get you multiple at bats that can show up multiple times for the same person.” If someone scrolls past the first slide, Instagram can show them the carousel again with a different slide.
  • Add music when it fits. It makes photo posts more engaging, which helps them get likes and comments, “which will help them get more reach.”
  • Try still videos. Some photographers publish short, almost static videos; Mosseri called it “an interesting idea”, not a requirement.

He was honest about the bigger picture too: people interact with video more, “but there's still lots of people who like to see photos, and so we want to make sure we support them, too.” A healthy brand calendar in 2026 mixes Reels for reach with carousels for depth, and lets the results decide the ratio.

Original Content Wins, Recycled Content Gets Replaced

Since its 2024 originality update, Instagram recommends the original version of a post and replaces identical reposts in recommendations. Accounts that repeatedly share other people's content (10 or more times in 30 days) are removed from recommendations entirely. Mosseri's message to them at the time: “Aggregators, we encourage you to create your own content going forward” (source).

The same logic applies to Trial Reels, which show a Reel to non-followers first. Experimenting is welcome; recycling is not:

“If you're just trying to experiment with lots of different reels and you want to use your trial reels a lot, that's totally fine. It's not going to affect your account in a negative way.”

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, Ask Me Anything in Instagram Stories, October 16, 2026 · Mosseri's profile

The catch, in the same answer: posting the same reel as a trial again and again “is not okay. We're going to crack down on that.”

What Does Not Affect Your Reach

A large part of Instagram advice is superstition. Here is what Mosseri has explicitly ruled out, with the date he said it. Every quote, with links to the original statements, is collected on our page Social Media Reach Myths, Debunked on the Record.

The scheduling answer deserves its own spotlight, because the myth that native posting gets more reach still costs teams hours every week:

“No, scheduling a post is not going to hurt its reach. I schedule posts all the time. Feel free to do so without worrying about it affecting your reach one way or the other.”

Scheduling tools publish through Instagram's official Content Publishing API, the pipe Meta built for exactly this purpose. The ranking looks at the post, not at the door it came through.

AI Content: Not Throttled, but It Should Be Labeled

“We do not throttle reach of AI content just for being AI content.”

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, Ask Me Anything in Instagram Stories, October 16, 2026 · Mosseri's profile

A week later he added the condition Instagram cares about:

“I think in general there's a lot of AI content on the platform. I actually think that's okay as long as it's content that you're interested in and that it's labeled. I think people should know what they're looking at and whether or not it is AI generated or not.”

For brands in the EU, labeling is becoming a legal topic as well as a ranking one. Our AI Playbook for social media teams explains how to use AI in content safely. The practical rule: let AI write the draft, add what only you have (the client's numbers, your opinion, a real photo), and label photorealistic AI images and video.

New Reach Lever: AI Dubbing Into Other Languages

Asked when AI dubbing arrives, Mosseri pointed out that it is already here for creator and public accounts: translations into “more than 12 languages”, in your own voice, with lip sync. It is opt-in: “We don't turn it on for you.”

“It's a great way to reach people who don't speak the same language that you do, which is a great way to increase your reach.”

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, Ask Me Anything in Instagram Stories, October 23, 2026 · Mosseri's profile

This matters most for brands in smaller language markets. A Czech, Slovak or Hungarian brand can now publish one Reel and let Instagram carry it to German, Spanish or English speakers. If your Reels have speech in them, Mosseri's advice is direct: “I highly encourage you to try them out.”

Users Now Steer Their Own Algorithm

Since December 2025 people can open “Your Algorithm”, see the topics shaping their recommendations and add or remove topics. It started in Reels and expanded to Explore and the main feed. In June 2026 Mosseri said the goal is to evolve it “from a setting to something that feels central to your experience on Instagram” (source).

The consequence for brands: an account with a clear, consistent topic is easier to match with people who actively asked for that topic. Random posting across ten themes makes you harder to recommend. Define three to five content pillars per brand and keep most posts inside them.

How to Put This Into Practice in Your Content Calendar

  1. Plan for sends. Add a “who would send this?” line to every brief, and treat it as an approval criterion.
  2. Mix formats on purpose. Reels for reach to non-followers, carousels for depth and repeat exposure, music where it fits.
  3. Stay original. No recycled reposts, no repeated Trial Reels of the same video.
  4. Keep pillars tight. Three to five topics per brand make you easier to recommend.
  5. Schedule without guilt. Post at the right time through the official API and spend the saved hours on better content.
  6. Label AI and keep a human in the loop. A clear approval step before anything goes live protects the brand and the client.

ZoomSphere is built for exactly this workflow: content pillars per brand, Reels, carousels and Stories scheduled through Instagram's official API, a client approval flow before anything is published and post-level analytics to see what actually traveled. With the ZoomSphere MCP connector you can even ask Claude or ChatGPT to plan next month's mix and send it to the client for approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most important Instagram ranking signals in 2026?

According to Adam Mosseri, the three signals that matter most are watch time, likes and sends. Likes matter slightly more for content from accounts you follow, sends matter slightly more for recommended content from accounts you don't follow. On October 23, 2026 he added that Instagram focuses a lot more on content people send to a friend than on comments.

Does the Instagram algorithm favor negativity?

No, according to Mosseri. On October 23, 2026 he said Instagram does not do anything on purpose to promote negativity. Comments are valued in the ranking model, but they are "not the most important part of value by a long shot". Instagram focuses more on reels and photos people send to a friend.

Can you grow on Instagram without Reels?

Yes. Mosseri said on October 23, 2026 that there are accounts that grow by posting only photos. He recommends carousels, which do better than single photos because they can be shown to the same person multiple times, and adding music when it fits creatively.

Does scheduling Instagram posts hurt reach?

No. Asked on October 23, 2026 whether scheduling hurts reach compared to posting directly, Mosseri said: "No, scheduling a post is not going to hurt its reach. I schedule posts all the time."

Does Instagram limit the reach of AI-generated content?

No. Mosseri said on October 16, 2026 that Instagram does not throttle AI content just for being AI content. On October 23, 2026 he added that AI content is okay as long as people are interested in it and it is labeled.

Do hashtags increase reach on Instagram in 2026?

No. Mosseri has said hashtags are useful for search but are not a way to get more reach.

Why does my friend have an Instagram feature that I don't?

Instagram usually launches new features to a small percentage of people, around 1%, to test them, and sometimes withholds a launched feature from a small group for a while to compare results. Mosseri calls these holdouts. It does not mean you are doing something wrong.
